Josh Holder, E-CYT

Josh is certified to teach Chair Yoga through Health Ways.  He has over 1000 hours teaching Chair Yoga to both the Mobility Impaired and Senior Community.  He has over 5000 hours teaching Yoga.

Josh began teaching chair yoga to accommodate a family member who was recovering from brain surgery. Her spinal issues prevented her from being on the floor. So, after receiving his Chair Yoga Teacher Certification, Josh added Chair Yoga to his teaching to help his family member. He also found that he encountered many students in his floor classes who would be better suited in Chair Yoga Classes due to back, knee and wrist pain. This has lead to Josh growing his chair yoga classes.  Now teaming up with Modern Yoga, he wants to offer chair yoga to a new community in Strongsville.  Josh has found that his biggest reward teaching chair yoga is that he can share the gift of yoga with people of ALL Ages, Body Types and Levels of Fitness.

 Benefits of Chair Yoga

Yoga has been shown to improve overall health, prevent and (even in some cases) reverse disease when practiced regularly as a lifestyle. With this in mind, it’s no surprise that it can therefore lend its benefits to those with mobility issues. Here are some of them:

1. Improved Strength

Chair yoga can help those with mobility issues add strength. This means that people will be better able to continue with hobbies and daily activities independently for many years to come. If they are unlucky enough to suffer a fall or injury, a strong body will be able to withstand this better and sustain fewer injuries.

2. Improved Flexibility

Chair yoga can help those with mobility issues to undertake activities that they have perhaps been unable to, such as reaching down to tie shoe laces or pick things up.

3. Improved Proprioception (Body Awareness/Balance)

Proprioception is the skill of knowing where your body is in space, and coordinating your movements accurately. This is particularly important for people with mobility impairment and can prevent falls. For people with disabilities or conditions such as MS, it may mean having greater control over your body and its movements.

4. Improved Mental Clarity

A regular Chair Yoga practice will aid in better concentration and focus.  It may also help with coping with feelings of isolation. Being calmer and more relaxed inevitably leads to a greater feeling of happiness and well-being, which everyone can benefit from!

5. Opportunities to Meet People and Socialize

Joining chair yoga classes for those with mobility issues will also give them a venue to socialize and make friends. However, it’s important that you choose an appropriate class so that the instructor will have specific knowledge about what is appropriate for you to do—they’ll be able to suitably adapt the exercises.

6. Improved Stress Management

Chair yoga (and yoga in general, really) includes breath work, which has been proven to effectively manage stress through meditation and paying attention to your breath. You can help your body and mind manage stress more effectively.

7. Pain Management

Chair yoga can lessen the impact of chronic illnesses and pain. Yoga uses meditation and paying attention to your breath, which can help your body and mind to cope with the pain of an illness or condition you may suffer with.  Many Chair Yoga Students find the postures and poses align the body to manage or resolve pain issues by strengthening and balancing your body.

Gentle Chair Yoga Workshop will include:

  1. Introduction of Chair Yoga for Beginners
  2. Instruction on sequences and poses
  3. Instruction on body alignment
  4. Demonstrations for all Poses
  5. Modifications to all poses based on your individual needs.
  6. Mindfulness breathing techniques.
  7. A Fun and Healthy environment to begin your yoga journey
  8. Last 20 minutes of workshop will be used for a Q & A Session
